The Delta
State government on Tuesday revealed that sixteen persons who were allegedly
involved in “Miracle Centers” outside the state have been arrested.
The step by the state government was driven towards
eradicating all forms of examination malpractice in the state.
The state government while speaking on examination
malpractice on the increase said, that the sixteen persons suspected to be
exams fraudsters were apprehended in Asaba last Monday.
The arrest was made possible through the help of exams’
fraud committee under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The report revealed that the suspects under the guise of
operating lecture centres, allegedly sort for unsuspecting desperate higher
institutions seekers into registering for WAEC/NECO with them after paying huge
sums of money.
Thereafter, they take the candidates to miracle centres in
Benin in Edo state or Onitsha, Anambra State where the examinations are written
for them by mercenaries.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chiedu Ebie,
while confirming the arrest stated that the suspects were arrested on
intelligence gathering.
He further stated that the leader of the suspects was
identified as “Arise and Shine”, while other names were withheld and they were
handed over to the police for prosecution.
The commissioner of police in the state, Anthony Ogbizi,
while speaking on the incident said, “the Suspects confessed to the crime and investigation is ongoing.
They will be charged to court on completion of an
investigation,”.
He warned that the police will bring to book perpetrators of
examination malpractice in the state.
Sources said exams’ fraudsters often work with principals of various schools as
they take their students after allegedly extorting unsuspecting desperate
higher institutions’ admission seekers with assurances of writing and passing
their examination in one sitting.
