EDUCATION IS A SOUL, BUT MUST NOT COST A SOUL

Education is a great path we all strive to walk through in Nigeria, which points that the importance of education cannot be overemphasized. Education according to the great Aristotle - "Education is the process of training man to fulfill his aim by exercising all the faculties to the fullest extent as a member of society"

It is acquainted with the fact that education can be formal or informal. But let's take Nigeria as a case study, here we have bestowed eternal honour, respect and hope on formal education than any other means of acquiring knowledge then believing and build the utmost belief and faith in surviving thought the lane alone.

In the last decade, quite number of students recorded to have committed suicide due to some reasons ranging from (having extra year, missing script, expulsion, carry-over among others) and after taking critical look at the likely-to-be causes of why they had to cut their innocent souls short, I found out that they believed they can only survive or make it in this life through education and nothing else forgetting many instances of those who drew and still drawing good lines in the lives of human but are not recorded to have passed through any University or Polytechnic.

If truly education is the only or almost only way of survival, this great Nigeria would have been in moribund long back, it is in this country a Military Diploma holder is been deputized by a Professor of Law. It is also in this country we see an uneducated (formal) man who owns a university and still stand firm to pay huge amount of money to Professors who are just subjects working under him.

This piece is not to antagonize or condemn education but to condemn the demonic thought of suicidal ideation that is breathing fast in the hearts of every student, no student should ever think of losing his or her precious life just because he is facing any difficulty or unusual moment during his educational pursuit.

The formal education as it is now does not even look so promising, owing to the fact that the government has already introduced entrepreneurship training into the University syllabus which directly or indirectly means; we do not and cannot guarantee you an employment after you must have graduated so you start using your degree certificate to learn how carpentry is being done or how soya beans is being refined to Beske.

I call on every student in Nigeria and diaspora to not let Fear and Shame of the society due to failed educational pursuit introduces you to having a second thought of terminating your precious and innocent lives Education is truly a soul but must not cost a soul
